Oil Sludge Question from your Audi Cousin
Hey Guys,
I was thinking the other day, and I was just wondering if you TT guys are having any issues about oil sludge. A4's (both B5 and B6's) there seems to be a few posts everyday about someones 1.8T failing because of oil sludge, do any of you TT guys have any symptoms or problem? Thanks.

None here ('02 TT, 26K miles). We also have an A4, and...
... have been watching the reports. From what I gather, it's a problem with mineral oil sludge (dinosaur), not synth.
So we run synthetic in both 1.8T's. The dealer here uses Castrol so that's what we do, but a lot of folks favor Mobil 1.
What failures have you heard about? At what mileage? And thanks for checking in with us over here!

The sludge problem really surfaced after Audi>>
extended its maintenance to 10k between oil changes. Most here, change their oil every 5k (or less), regardless. That combined with a steady diet of synthetic has kept it away from most on the TT forum...
I have heard of TT's affected by it tho, but most are following Audi's recommended service...just my opinion here...but an ounce of prevention by changing it more frequently...especially on a turbo car!

No problems here ('02 TT 15k)...I think Audi has switched to synthetic for A4 oil changes>
I never had any problem with my old B5, but after warranty I changed the oil every 3K. My mother had turbo failure around 10K on her B6. A friend just had oil sludge repairs on his '03 B6 with 40k. Another got a new engine in his '02, and all these cars are stock.

I think is has more to do w/TT's transverse engine vs. A4's longitudinal layout...>>
The transverse layout in TT's, Golfs and Jettas has a larger sump (4.8 qts for my TT) while the A4's and Passats with the longitudinally-mounted 1.8T have smaller sumps (wife's Passat= 4.2 qts). It may also be that the transverse layout makes for better cooling, as the oil pan appears much more exposed to airflow than the longitudinally-mounted oil pans (?)
Several here have had their synthetic oil tested after 10k miles and results have come back Ok...
~Just my .02 based on wise-sounding speculation...
