OT: Anyone familiar with the restaurant "Steak n Shake"? What are your general thoughts about it?

It's the only restaurant I've worked in that I still eat in.
Here in Indianapolis, there's a Steak -n- Shake every few miles all over the city. I can find most of them in the dark. Some are cleaner and smell better than others. Same thing with ANY restaurant.
The best thing to do is check the bathrooms. If they aren't clean to what you're comfortable with, then don't eat there. That's my rule of thumb for all eating establishments.

Good burgers, GREAT shakes, but they are definitely NOT 24 Hours anymore in many locations...
Even though the store still has "Open 24 hours" plastered all over it, I know for a fact the Madison, Wisconsin store closes around midnight during the week and 1 or 2 AM on weekends...
(Not unlike my local Kinko's which just changed their hours from 7A - 10P! How's that for useless...)

I went there once. Horrible experience.
3 of us stopped in for shakes around 9pm during the week. We were seated and then 30 minutes later or waitress greeted us. 15 minutes later she took our order for 3 shakes. 45 minutes later we got our shakes. 2 years later and I have not been back.

They have been around for ages. Great mix between traditional restaurant and fast food.
You get to sit down, order off a menu, and still get pretty quick service. And the food is better than regular fast food but not quite as good as some traditional restaurants.

Based on my experience eating there in the midwest...
I got the feeling of poor quality management for the FEW chains that I ever went to. Grease sticks in my memory.
They have a distinctive theme that helps to distinquish themselves from their competition.
Do you know if they are a franchise setup or not? If so, how do they ensure quality across the franchise today? (yeah, I know, questions you're already asking yourself, but I couldn't resist)
If I see a Wendy's, Steak n Shake and a McD's next to each other I'll pick McD's for lunch and Wendy's for dinner. I won't even think about going to the Steak n Shake based on my experience from TEN years ago.
If we wanted a cheap meal at a place that was open late, we'd pick Denny's over Steak n Shake... unless we wanted their fries. I do recall a lot of friends liked them.

wow, Bill we've all but given up on McDOnalds here. Only when the kids scream and scream
is what I hear from friends. I KNOW that it is a franchisee problem. I know the franchisee socially and he laughs publicly at how much money he makes and how crappy his stores are. :OW
