*Threadjack* Dave, explain something for me, please: Why the obsession in the UK with number plates?

Why do people care so much about specialized number plates in the U.K.? Why are certain letter regs more popular than others? I could *possibly* understand plates selling for ?thousands if they were custom/vanity plates, but I don't understand the need to have specific letters.

Any insight would be appreciated.
