POLL: Before you purchased your TT, what other cars did you consider?
I knew it had to be a roadster so my choices were:
SLK 320-didn't like it. Interior looked boring
Z3-looked weird to me and too small. Interior looked cheap
Boxster S-I've seen to many. Cheap interior
I did consider a couple sedans:
S4- was ok but really wanted a convertible
older SL 500 roadster- not hip enough
M3- convertible M3 didn't look good to me

i had money down on an a4 3.0 6speed
drove it, liked it, but i didn't get terribly emotional. was just a nice car with a nice exhaust note.
i considered a 330ci, but rwd in winter..bleh. not for a daily driver.
mb c230? boring. 320 gets way up there in price.
newish e36 m3? driving nirvana, but not a car i would want to take out in the snow.
clk 320? auto tranny. blah.
i drove the tt, and it just resonated with me.. if i'm spending this much cash on a car, it should connect somehow. for a few years, this car will suit me just fine.
until i land a real job, and get myself an e46 m3 convertible. yum.
that being said, fwiw, i saw a new 996 (new style rims) that was all sorts of dirty, brake dust, dirty body .. and it really made me smile, oddly, because it was so obviously a daily driver. that's cool!

a few
E36 M3
Corvette
964 RSA (Porsche 911 body style built from 90-94)
S4
Then reality set in, and it came down to the S4 and TT.. Since I knew the car wasn't staying stock and I couldn't afford a turbo upgrade for an S4 I got the TT.. I also wanted the car that handled better, and would have a better setup for the track..
Next car.. Im not getting another car until I can get a 993TT or Skyline.. Thats a Porsche 911 TT for those of you not familiar with the Porsche line..

Mine was a progression over the years...
When I was poor, I considered the Civic.
Then I got a raise and started looking at Jettas.
Then I got a new job and started looking at Passats.
Then I drove a 4-Motion Passat in the snow, got hooked on AWD and noticed that A4s cost about as much.
Then I saw the TT on Audi's web site.
For a while, I was back and forth between the A4 (practicality) and the TT (just plain cool) but the TT eventually won after I managed to get a test drive.
I also briefly considered the Z3, BMW 3-series (both RWD, and I didn't want that because of snow), Mitsubishi Eclipse (I don't like the look of the newest models), and a few others that I can't think of right now. The TT met my demands for a fun car that I can drive all year.

TT Roadster was the only serious competitor to my TT coupe. Rotten winters and late summer here in Chicago swung the choice for the coupe.
Drove all the others and surprisingly the WRX was the next runner up. Ruled it out because it is so ugly.

Used Corrado, Boxster S, Z3M, M3 TT
TT funny enough was the last car I tested but won hands down on just about all accounts. OK so it's not a screaming 300+hp monster but it's the most fun I've had in a car ever since I began driving.
Besides, if I win lotto or something I can always call up HPA (who seem to have now updated their web!)
