Default well. ..

yes there were 16v gti and gli cars but they also made 8v gti and gli's at the same time. they made a 2.0 8v gti up till the late 90's when the body changed to the current look. now gti's are either a 1.8t or vr6. or at least i think that is how it goes

Default It is quite confusing when you talk about all markets, but for the US

it was basically the following

MK1 1977-1982 1.6 8V (Rabbit)

MK1 1983-1984 1.8 8V (Rabbit) 1.8 8V High CR (GTI)

MK2 1985-1986 1.8 8V (Golf/GTI)

MK2 1987-1989 1.8 8V (Golf/GTI) or
1.8 16V (GTI only)

MK2 1990-1992 1.8 8V (Golf/GTI) or
2.0 16V (GTI only)

MK3 1994 Golf (no gti model until 1995)
2.0 8V cross flow motor

MK3 1995 Golf/GTI 2.0 8V or
new VR6 (GTI only)

Default I still do, but it's not as much a VW as it once was---->

a few parts are original, but they are quickly failing/being modded. Amazing enough, I'm still on my first transmission, the design safety factor must have been greater than 3.
