Default Is it possible to change batteries in the key fob yourself?

if so what type of battery does it take? or will it need to be recoded or whatever by the dealer?

Default you can recode it yourself...look in the manual...its pretty easy...as for the battery...

It takes a very talented person
Actually, I have no idea, but my local Interstate Battery store had it changed in about 3 minutes...so I am sure if you have the batter, then you can do it fairly easily.

Default It died that fast?

I had a 2001 GTI and the key fob battery was still good after over 3 years.

Default It's easy and you don't need to recode.

Use a small flattip in the slot on the back, this will slit the key from the transmitter. The you just use your fingers to lift off the back of the transmitter and change the 2 button batts. I got mine at Walmart. Less the 2 bucks each.

Default On my '01, the manual's reset procedure didn't work; here's what did ...>

A variant of VW's procedure worked on mine, whereas the Audi manual's reset procedure didn't. If the procedure in your manual doesn't reset the remote, try this:
- Insert remote into driver's side lock
- Turn key to lock/unlock door
- Press either lock/unlock button on the remote

Now when you remove the key, it should work... at least it did for me.

BTW, I couldn't find the batteries at typical drug stores, but did find them at a watch battery place in a mall.
