Default Power steering going out?

I've noticed this over the last couple of days. Audible whirring/whining noise when at a standstill and giving a little gas and turning the wheeel. Same result moving forward slowly or turning out of a parking lot. Haven't checked fluid levels, but I think it was checked with recent oil change 2 weeks ago. 102k on the car. Fearing the worst scenario, what might replacement cost for a powersteering unit run?

Default Thanks Steve. My initial thought.

If fluid levels are up, is this the sound of power steering going out?

Default Could be, but you're jumping to conclusions until you check the fluid..

It's usually the racks that go, not the (inexpensive) pump...

Default Very well then. Thank you...>>>

At about 90k, my mechanic did tell me that the steering rack needed replacement. I put that off being I haven't felt any ill steering effects and really would not know how a bad steering rack would feel anyway.

Default since my warranty was over awhile ago, and i was well under the 50K mark, i'd figure

that i wouldn't need anything major done. wrong. before my rack completely failed, i was experiencing odd sounds, but put it off until the steering felt so heavy at intermitent times one morning. i figured that the fluid was low, since it was intermitent and filled it up when i got back in the afternoon. i poured in an entire bottle...started up the car and rolled it back, took it for a spin around the corner and noticed that it got worse. got back to the house and noticed a nice stream of brake fluid in a nice sweeping arc due to backing out of my parking spot.

at this point, the intermitent heavy steering became constant, so i took it in to an indie repair place. turned out, it was my steering rack...hmmm...at 42K? who would have figured. so i had them repair it. cost was up there...way over $1K IIRC. the car came back and felt like it was off the showroom floor. don't ever think that it felt as good as it did...but drives nice and with Defcons in, to this day, feels like a dream.

Default you can probably get a remanufactured unit...but will need to drop the subframe, etc.

so cost, including alignment will be somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,400.
