Pulled front control arms today to send to Mike for DEFCON install and...
Found that the rear bushing on both sides showed cracks in the rubber. Granted car is now 8 years in service, but has only seen 20K miles.

Yes, They all crack. Your new ones will too before long.
Are you putting MK1 or MK2 rear bushings back?
I did MK2s in the rear with the Defcons and MK1s in the front. I believe they call that Defcon 2.

I have only replace one set that was not cracked/worn. If you like, we can try the older
MK1 style rear bush. They are reported to last longer, but I do not know if that is fact, and I do not personally know the impact on performance.

My MK1 rears...>>>
still looked great when removed from the car in Early 2007 6-7 years old at that point). To my knowledge Sal is still running the original bushings in those arms..

Spray your bushes, and also CV boots, with silicone. Or, apply something else you know
helps condition and protect the rubber.
I used to buy new cars and ALWAYS treated the rubber underneath the car with silicone spray. NEVER had an issue with any rubber part.
After I started buying used cars, whether conducting preventive or corrective maintenance, silicone has been applied. I know silicone is bad juju inside the car, but I've only seen positive results when used externally.
Rubber is the ONLY thing I'll spray silicone on; for everything else, I use oils or lubricants (or greases) suited to the task (and I continually learn more through places like AW).

True, but this did not look like an age crack
They were both cracked in the same place, about halfway between the inside and outside metal and about 1/4 of the way around the circumferance. Rubber felt pliable and was not brittle, all other areas looked OK.
They're on their way to Mike, so I can't add any more than that.
