Default question about lower octane gas. does it hurt your engine?

1st things first: I will never put lower octane gas in my TT.

However, my undertanding of octane is that it increases the flash point of gas, thus decreasing knocking, the premature combustion of gas in a cylinder, before its piston reaches its apex.

So the real question is this: Is knocking bad for your engine? If so, why?

Default Knocking will hurt your engine and high octane gas prevents knock...

Tons of info on this but the attached link gives some info RE: Turbos, knock and octane.

knock

Default additional question, if octane rating describes the octane/heptane ratio of gasoline

what about 100+ octane gasses? 115 octane means the gas is 115% octane? what?

Your engine should have a knock sensor that recognizes the detonation caused by too low of an octane and it should adjust the timing so that it is not harmful. Performance would be compromised.

Default but why does knocking damage the engine? seems like it just indicates a waste of gas

does it throw of the balance of the engine?

Default it puts momentary high pressure on your cylinder chamber, and on the piston rod connector...

becuase the piston that is knocking wants to go the opposite direction of everything else in your engine.

It also increases temperature.

good thing our timing retards and advances by the ECU.
