Question for those who have changed their own trans oil... >>
How important is it to have the car level when draining out the old and adding the appropriate amound of new oil? I usually drive the front end of mine up on ramps to change the engine oil -- is this sufficient for changing the tranny oil... or do I need to also jack up the rear to make it level?
Also any opinions on Redline vs. Amsoil? I'm looking to smooth the 2nd synchro action, which can grind unless shifted slowly. I know most here use Redline but my son's friend is an Amsoil dealer. So I'm wondering if anybody's got experience with both.
TIA, ~john

Redline vs. Amsoil?
I've had both in my TT, the AmsOil is smoother. There's no grind at all. With any lube, shift action can be a bit notchy at "drive off" when the temps drop into the 30's (or lower) overnight, but the AmsOil warms very quickly... one trip through the gears is all it takes for warm up, and shifting's restored to "summer time" smoothness.
It's OK to change oil with only the front of the car "up". It will drain fine. You may get a tiny bit more of the new lube into the trans, but this has proven harmless...

more

I switched to redline MTL . . . good fluid. Too bad Dave Granquist@redline doesn't know what he's
talking about . . . . keeps on claiming the OE gear oil is a 75w90, although VOAs of the OE G0521715A2 indicate that it has the viscosity of ATF. MTL is slightly thicker and offers better protection than stock.

Yes, it must be level. If you don't have 4 jackstands>>
raise the front (stands, not ramps) remove drain plug, lower to ground, allow to drain, raise front again, replace drain plug, remove fill plug, set up your funnel from the top, lower car so it is level again (release parking brake, push fwd & back), refill until oil comes out of fill plug, replace fill plug without raising car, then raise car to torque fill plug if necessary.
You must have the car flat otherwise the tranny will be over / under filled. I wouldn't risk it.
