Over the last few months I've had road noise that is getting louder. It is definitly related to the speed of the car but not the surface of the road. It is sort of a hum that is getting louder over time. The noise is primarily in the rear and loudest at highway speeds. It is independent of engine speed. It does appear to get louder when I have a passenger in the car.

My car is a 2001 225Q with 130,000 miles. I've discounted tire noise as the problem since the noise did not change when I switched from my winter tires to the summer tires earlier this year.

I've jacked it up and rotated all four wheels with nothing apparent showing up. CV boots are fine. Been under the car several times but nothing is evident.

Suggestions as to where else to look would be appreciated. Passengers are starting to comment on the noise.

I buy 6 tanks of fuel a year but that gives me extra money for 2 oil changes !
