Default No ice on this driveway! (thought you may appreciate this after all the snow pix)

My parents decided that it was time to do something about shoveling the driveway... They put in a heated driveway in Maine! Very nice touch. The snow sensor turns the system on when humidity gets to 100% and the temp is in the freezing range. Once up to speed the thing keeps the pavement at around 37 degrees F. This is a picture of the result.

Don't let this fool you... we still have plenty of shoveling to do: walkway to right of driveway; back deck (14x45!); roof. And of course after the roof is done, the back deck has to be done again!

Just thought you'd like to see a semi-unique approach to driveway maintenance. We had a few too many instances where a Subaru or Blazer would end up going down the driveway sideways.

Default Nope... I doubt it was cheap. :-)

I guess one way of looking at it is that it was well worth spending my inheritance. ;-) I won't have to shovel the driveway anymore that's for sure.

We have a friend in town (Maine) who has a brother in Alaska. The brother was where the idea came from since he has it... you listening AKRascal? :-)

Default The Volvo is wired... with Christmas lights!

We have wires on the roof to keep the icicles to a minimum. I was asking if the snow sensor could be hooked up to switch that on and off too.

All done shoveling the rest... now back to work. :-( My boss needs some serious help while I'm on vacation. I'm in a brown-nosing mood I guess. :-D

Default Washington State University does this with steam pipes under the sidewalks....

very odd the first time you see snow everywhere but the sidewalks.

Default We're pumping anti-freeze through pipes on the driveway...

I saw it first at my highschool. There was one set of outside stairs that never got any sunlight. They did it there, but it never worked. On the colder days we'd end up with an ice ramp two stories high. :-)
