They modify your chip by attaching a socket so you can go from the stock chip to the modified version. The dealer can find the chip if they look and there are here who warn against it(larry) in case they send the chip to Germany if they suspect a problem with it. I am not really worried though because since I had planned on getting a chip (I was debating on buying a new ecu or get mine socketed) I put a peice of clear tape over the plastic thing that covers the ecu and it has never been touched, so I doubt unless there is a problem they will ever look. I am sure someone here can give a better explanation on how socketing works.
