Default smoked corners mod... and a monumental failure... (bw warning!)

so after conspiring for several weeks, aaron (power5) and i finally teamed up to do the whole clear corners thing.

however, i'm not a big fan of clear lights on black cars, so i decided to 'smoke' mine using some of vht's 'nite shades' tint spray. since i was gonna have the lights apart, i figured that i'd spray them anthracite, if not only to do something a lil' different than to compliment the SL's that are on my car.

we also had plans to make the angel eyes mod work using LED's... and we failed miserably.

anyhoo...

phase one: front clip removed.
<img src="http://www.personal.kent.edu/~cplasket/smoked-corners/slides/DSCN0004.JPG">
(gotta love how ECS left my alien washer hoses in tact despite the fact that i had them remove the aliens)

phase two: lights removed.
<img src="http://www.personal.kent.edu/~cplasket/smoked-corners/slides/DSCN0005.JPG">
after a few minutes baking in the oven, these guys came apart with little hesitation...

phase three: making new lenses.
<img src="http://www.personal.kent.edu/~cplasket/smoked-corners/slides/DSCN0007.JPG">
this pic also shows the angel eyes rings...

phase four: burning myself with molten plastic.
<img src="http://www.personal.kent.edu/~cplasket/smoked-corners/slides/DSCN0011.JPG">
aaron was polishing my intercooler (he seemed to be really into this... ??) whilst i whittled away at the angel eye rings and the new lenses... just so you know, the plastic that dremmels throw at you is VERY hot. duh.

(since i can hardly let his efforts go to waste, a picture of my freshly shined intercooler)
<img src="http://www.personal.kent.edu/~cplasket/smoked-corners/slides/DSCN0010.JPG">

phase five: smokin' the lenses and painting the housings.
<img src="http://www.personal.kent.edu/~cplasket/smoked-corners/slides/DSCN0012.JPG">

<img src="http://www.personal.kent.edu/~cplasket/smoked-corners/slides/DSCN0013.JPG">

phase six: ultimately deciding that we'd wasted hours trying to make LED angel eyes work.
<img src="http://www.personal.kent.edu/~cplasket/smoked-corners/slides/DSCN0015.JPG">

phase seven: putting the lights back together and gettin' em in the car.
<img src="http://www.personal.kent.edu/~cplasket/smoked-corners/slides/DSCN0016.JPG">

phase eight: putting the rest of the car back together.
<img src="http://www.personal.kent.edu/~cplasket/smoked-corners/slides/DSCN0017.JPG">

phase nine: my car vs. aaron's car in a duel to the death. or something.
<img src="http://www.personal.kent.edu/~cplasket/smoked-corners/slides/DSCN0019.JPG">

so, many hours (and too few beers later), that's that.

hope you all had fun.

and didn't burn yourselves.

Default I like it, different and looks good.

How do the anthracite painted covers look in person?

Default thanks... they're VERY subtle...

i'll post more pics soon...

basically, if you didn't know that they were different, you wouldn't be able to tell... a slightly different shade with a lot more sparkle than stock.

side by side comparison with stock, they look a lot better.

Default Very nice. A few Q's....

First, you need to get some shots during the day! I bet the smoked signals look sa-weet on a black TT.
Did you fill in the holes from the side reflector before you painted it?
Why did the angel eyes fail??
Any worries about having illegal turn signals?

Default here we go...

'First, you need to get some shots during the day!'

i agree! i'll have 'em up asap!

'I bet the smoked signals look sa-weet on a black TT.'

when i get the shots up, you'll have to let me know what you think!

'Did you fill in the holes from the side reflector before you painted it?'

no. we were going to, but didn't have any of the necessary materials convenient. ultimately, you can't really tell until you're right up on them, and even then, if you didn't know what you were looking for, you wouldn't see them.

'Why did the angel eyes fail??'

the LED's didn't throw enough light to fill the ring. it may have been that we made our etches in the rings too deep, or it may be that the people that can get away with this have much smaller lights (and thus much smaller rings) to contend with.

'Any worries about having illegal turn signals?'

no. they don't illuminate white or amber... somewhere in-between. there seems to be a lot of orange in the nite shades spray, so they still look fairly yellow. also, it's one of those things that's pretty obscure. technically, it's illegal to remove the big orange reflector, but i doubt anyone would be up enough on the laws to ticket someone for it.

MyBluTT used some of the housing goo/sealant to fill the holes enuf to keep light from leaking.

Default we put some goo back there, yes, but didn't fill the holes. no leaks detected yet!

Nice wheels. ;^) &amp; why didn't you just smoke the stock lense, then they would light amber.

Default to do that, it requires so many coats that the quality of light is very poor...

this way, though they don't illuminate amber, they do still throw a lot of light.

i'd rather have the wrong colour than be really dim. (insert jokes about me being dim here)
