I know of a market/restaurant in Carlsbad (Northern San Diego County) that is owned by a German gentleman. Tip Top Meats not only offers the finest quality meat, but they have a casual, but excellent restaurant offering delicious, authentic, and very cheap German food. I like the Roudalen (sp?). Most of the lunches/dinners are under $10, and the quality is outstanding.

Don't expect too much in terms of service. You serve yourself, and the atmosphere is okay. The market features many hard to find German sundrie items. I know they sell beer to go, I think you can drink it there too, but I'd have to double check.

If we did this, I'd probably schedule it in the near future on a Sat or Sun. It's not super convenient for you L.A. folks, but it is 40 minutes north of downtown San Diego.
