Default Speedometer recalibration?

I was driving on the highway this weekend, and just as I passed a mile marker I reset my trip odometer. After 10 actual miles, I noticed that my odometer read 10.5. Hmmm...

I decided to conduct an experiment. I set my cruise at a precise, comfortable 80 mph. I reset the odometer and trip timer at the next mile marker. After exactly one hour, the odometer read 80.0 miles (as it should), but according to the mile markers, I had actually traveled less than 76! That means my speedometer is reading more than 4 mph faster than my actually speed.

Taking this further, when I traveled 100 actual miles, my odometer read 105.6. This means that for every 1000 miles I travel, the odometer records 56 EXTRA miles. I have approximately 20K miles on my TT (according to my odometer). Therefore, my odometer has recorded over 1000 miles THAT NEVER HAPPENED! My TT is undervalued.

Apparently, I need to have my speedometer recalibrated. Has anyone had this done? Also, is it possible for the dealer to adjust my odometer to more accurately reflect how many miles I actually have on my car (i.e. knock off 1000 miles)?

Default Don't think it is legal for anyone to change your odo. (Think being key) Was it a % error, like

2 at 40 and 3 at 60? I know that might be tough to do on the I. Heck, a police "calibrated" speedo only has to be within, 2-3 MPH. The fact that every tire brand/model within a size is not the same OD will make a diff also. Add all of the +/- up, you could get 5% off, no prob. (4 at 80 = 5%) I always love when you get VASCARed by a moving cop, gives time and distance to .01 sec and .0001 miles. Right... Yes, I have had one give me a VASCAR from a moving Camaro. He looked out the rear view mirror and "clocked me" moving past reflector poles on the interstate.

Default Not sure. I can't imagine it is the same all the way through the speed range.

I suppose I could do the same experiment at 55 and see how it far off it is. Although, it might be even worse at 55!

I do a lot of highway driving, so most of my miles are high-speed, which adds up to extra miles.
