starter problems

I have a 2002 tt alms with 7k miles on it.
The other day after washing the car, I noticed that when I turned the ignition, the starter hesitated/stuttered a little. The car finally started. When I turned on the radio, it read "SAFE". I had to re-input the radio code in order to use it.

Well...I washed the car again, and this time the starter "clicked" [sorry for the technical terms] and the dash lights flashed. After several attempts, the car finally started. But, again the radio read "SAFE".

Is this a battery lead connection problem, or the starter?
Other?

I would start by checking the battery terminals, make sure they >>

are clean and tight (remove them to clean, not just the outside of the terminal, remember NEGATIVE first). If isn't that, well time of a new batt.

If you use a wrench on the positive post first, there is a chance you will touch the end to ground..

in effect, shorting the battery, possibly welding the wrench to the ground point, and possibly exploding the battery.

Removing the negative cable from that post first eliminates this chance.
