Default timing belt change???

Hi all,
just got 2001 TT(225hp) with only 23k miles. Do I need to change timing belt and other stuff that goes with it because of the age rather than mileage??? 2bennett in Davis CA told me 75k miles but I was reading on the web to change it every 5years if not because of mileage. Should I do it or not??? Thank you.

I'd rather be safe than sorry...

I'd do 60k based on mileage alone, however at around 8 years... it might be worth it to get it done.

Sounds like a very nice find. Mine had 23000 miles when I bought it but that was 5 years ago. You are in uncharted waters with such low mileage but 8 years of age. No one really has data on TB failure probability of a car with that history. We have all agreed that 60000 or five years is a good guideline, but that really doesn't fit your car. I would plan to change it (water pump and tensioner too) soon, so that you will have peace of mind. I wouldn't stress too much however as I think that mileage is more of a factor than age on these components. Diesel Geek sells a good kit with all the parts. That is where I got mine.

Also check out Bertini's German Motors in Roseville or IPB Autosport in Sacramento. Both are excellent shops.

Thank you guys for all your responds. . As TTEUER said "...be safe than sorry" I decided to get TB kit form Jim @ dieselgeek included thermostat.
Sport Haus in Reno, NV quoted me around $588 for labor only so not too bad(any opinions of that shop). 2bennett did serviced my old tt but drive and time there is a pain in...
So thank you guys for all your helpful opinions here.

Default Do it now!

I bought my 01 Roadster (build 3-00) in 2006 with 15 K miles. In summer 2007 I had the TB and WP changed at 20.5 K miles. The WP had three cracks in the impeller and the tech said the TB looked like it had many more miles.

Regardless of mileage you are due to change the TB and WP after 7 years on this engine I think.

Default This and other TT forums are littered with tb failures on low mileage older cars

All by idiots who did not bother to search the net about the issue until after it broke, so kudos to you! I bought a used 04 with 8K on the ticker 2 years ago and did the TB kit this month at 30K because it was 5 years old. Change it at 5 years/60K or be prepared for a $7K engine overhaul. If your mechanic says it does not need to be done, take it elswhere because he knows nothing about this car.

Mine was 22,500 five years ago when I bought it.
