Default Timing belt failure (semi-long)

I'm approaching the 60K service and was talking to Terry Griffin at Griffin Motorwerke about the Haldex, among other things.

He showed me two 1.8T motors that he's working on now.

Apparently, though the toothed belt is not scheduled to be replaced until 80K miles, the hydraulic tension adjuster to the belt fails at around 60K plus miles, sometimes causing catastrophic engine damage. He's recommending that, at the 60k service, I replace the hydraulic tension adjuster with a manual one (and replace the timing belt, too, of course)

I'd be interested if anyone has heard of this problem with the 1.8T motor.

Default Ack....... major engine failure out of warranty would not be good.

Yikes....

If the unit is replaced by a manual one. How does tension get adjusted. I think I know the answer (Manually)... Seems labor intensive.

Yes, manually, but you don't have to do it that frequently.

Default I would guess every 20K or so....

Does the Hydraulic unit simply not do the job? Would it make sense to just replace the OE one and the belt every 60k and forget about it?

Default The problem is the plastic bracket that holds the hydraulic unit.

It breaks.

I am considering getting a replacement hydraulic unit rather than switching to a manual unit.

Default I think that's the way I'd go too. Perhaps newer Hydraulic tensioners have

up-rated/improved plastic?

I still have another 25K until 60K so perhaps it'll be a known issue by then.

Default This was a re-occuring problem with the Old A4's. The tensioner was changed on 2000...

and above models. Don't know if it affect's the 1.8 in the TT.

Needed new engine. Audi basically told him to stick the car up his ***. VW at least has 100K powertrain.
Are we next?
Here is a pic of the belt tensioner redesign on the A4 1.8t .

Good information. I'll check this with Terry.
