Default Tire Q. -?-

It's about that time. My tires are so wearing out I see white spots and they look like there going to pop any day now. They are 245/45/R17 with stock rims. I know what the r17 stands for the size of the rims but what is the 245/45 number stand for? Can I put thinner tires on there or is that bad, if so which number would change(245/45)? Can I go to the dealer for tires? Oh yes, and what kind of tires I'm not really fond of these brigdestones. Dunlops,Pirelli,Yokohamas,Goodyears?????
Thanks

Default Re: Tire Q. -?-

I believe the 245 is the width in milimeters and the stock tires are typically 225 (check under your filler cap too).
The 45 should be a ratio determining your side wall height.
I probabaly wouldn't go thinner than 225 and I'm sure a lot of folks here might go fatter than 245 - just as long as they don't rub.

If you do a Search, you may have more luck but below is an old post of mine.

Recommendation based on my 16K results:
G-Force T/A KDW 235/45/ZR17
149.00 ea (or 653.00 OTD Total 4 installed)
@ Costco (worth the membership price).
Includes Lifetime rotation, bal, Rd Hzrd, and they'll pro-rate the value towards your next set if you have premature wear.
Other choices are available, sometimes not in stock but they will order.
Note: always confirm correct Lug Nut Torque on any install.
My performance results are excellent with very low road noise.

And, particularly if you have Quattro, make sure all of your tires match.
