I'm replacing the front axles on my 2001 TT quattro and it looks like there's a special nut holding the outer end of the axle in and special star shaped bolts holding the inner end of the axle in. Does anyone know what type of socket and size is needed for the outer nut and what type and size of tool is needed for the inner bolts to remove it?
I just replaced a front axle last week. The nut at the outer end is a 30mm 12 point socket. The 6 inner bolts are 10mm "Triple square" bolts. I bought the socket and bit set at O'Reilly's Auto Parts. You can rent the 30mm socket for free at O'Reilly's instead of buying it. It is part of their axle service tool set.
I used my electric impact wrench and an extension bar to get out the 6 inner bolts and put them back in. And a breaker bar to get the outer nut off and torque wrench to put it back on.
When a wheel bearing goes bad, you will know it by the funny noises that get progressively worse. Don't replace as a PM item. Also, don't buy Chinese junk for these critical parts. OEM or OES (SKF Brand) cost more but will last 200,000 or more miles if you follow the proper procedure to replace the Axle half shafts.
I one time bought a Chinese crap wheel bearing saving $30.00 and barely got a year (20,000 miles out of one. Doing a job twice is never any fun.
