Tranny Problems on the 225? Read this from 'Audi Driver' hey, it's *magnesium!*
Tight gearchange
I am delighted with my TT 225, but one feature does upset
me. Before it is fully warmed up, selecting first or second gear is far
too difficult. Is this a fault of my particular car, or is it a more general
complaint?
Mike Williams Coulsdon, Surrey
The TT uses the 02M gearbox, which has a magnesium casing. Because of difffering coefficients of expansion, a reduction in temperature causes it to contract to a greater extent than the steel shafts.
This, in turn, reduces the axial play of the input shaft and this is what
causes the gear selection difficulty. Once the gearbox has warmed up, the axial
play returns to normal. From November 1999, the axial play of the shaft was
increased to overcome this problem. The problem can also affect the S3 which
uses the same gearbox. Gearboxes with the increased axial play were fitted from chassis numbers 8L YA 060942 and 8N YI 054 427 respectively, but some cars built before these dates also had the modified gearbox. If the car is still under warranty and the problem persists, discuss it with your Audi Centre.
