trouble changing brake pads.

trouble changing brake pads.
So today I tried to help my friend change his rear brake pads on his TT (180 non q). I followed some instructions that I found from doing a search. I got everything off okay but couldn't get the piston to compress. I used a pair of pointed vise grips and turned the piston 360 degrees but it still didn't compress. Am I doing something wrong?
Any other links out there with instructions?

you need to turn and compress the piston at the same time.
The red clamp is an edging clamp, about $3.00 at just about any good hardware store.
Blue is a large 'water pump' pliers
Don't pinch the vinyl boot.
