TT Coupe v. Roadster Quandry

TT Coupe v. Roadster Quandry
I'm new to the TT world and have some questions.
My wife and I are considering getting a third car just to enjoy when the opportunity arises.
Try as I might, I can't convince her to learn how to drive a manual transmission.
We had been leaning towards a new Miata but it just seemed a bit too small when we got it on the road. It was loads of fun to drive, but she got a bit spooked about safety issues.
The TT seems like it may be a more comfortable fit for us. It promises to be fun to drive and appears to provide a bit more protection for the occupants. Am I wrong about that?
I've been focused on picking up a used 2004 3.2 -- everything I've heard about DSG suggests it will be a good choice for us.
I'm a bit leery about the automatic with the 180hp FWD (both because I don't typically like FWD and I fear that the car will simply be underpowered). Am I off-base on that front?
I'm really torn between the coupe as opposed to the convertible. I've not spent too much time in convertibles -- but when I've had the chance to drive a roadster with the top down it was tons of fun. I worry about limited visibility when driving the TT coupe. On the other hand, I trust that the coupe is stiffer and probably handles a bit better. I also expect that the coupe is a safer vehicle. Finally, it seems like there are more CPO 3.2 coupes on the market than convertibles.
For what it's worth, my daily driver is a 2004 A6 2.7T S line and my wife drives an Acura MDX.
We live in Chicago and will not drive the TT during the winter.
Choices, choices. I seem to be chasing my tail on this one. Of course, I clearly need to do some test driving.
Until I get the chance, I'd really appreciate it if you'd share your thoughts with me on some or all of the issues I raised above.
Thanks in advance.

I prefer the coupe - no visibility issues >>>

I am not a roadster guys so my view might be biased, but - the coupe is a secure, weatherproof, very felxible and useful vehicle. This photo is packing for two for a week to attend TT East '05. Notice the rear seats are up - even more room with them down.

Seriously, you're thinking "fun car"...I was in Chicago last year during that June heatwave...I LOVE MY ROADSTER...and I'm sure you will too...heck, you might even consider driving it more than in the summer.

considering that you and your wife have your respective daily commuters...
I would assume that you want a vehicle for sheer enjoyment. I was faced with the same dilemma when trying to decide between the coupe and the roadster. the problem with the roadster is that it has no trunk space, and the determing factor for me was that it could not accomodate two sets of golf clubs, and I unfortunately did not have the luxury of another vehicle, so i opted for the coupe. I love the coupe but I do miss my previous vehicle which was a convertible, there's nothing like driving with the top down on a summer day or night. The experience of a convertible is something that is just unique. Good luck, either way, you're in for loads of fun.

No question here, you want fun, get the roadster and don't be afraid of the DSG
it is one fantastic tranny, using the paddles it will outshift most of us with standard transmissions. My TT is my daily driver and hence a coupe, for summer fun I have a lil spyder.

DSG is awesome. I bought a roadster (also as a third car). On a nice day, you can't beat...
... going top-down. And if the weather's less than good, you keep the top up.
Coupe is probably a bit more rigid, but not a reason to shy away from the convertible.
