TT vs a Mustang - On ice - if safety was the only factor?
Hi
Im trying to help my 17 year old choose a car. He has tried and really likes both TTs and the updated Mustangs.
I'm Sure this is a strange question for this board but if safety was the only factor which would come out on top? Specifically a 2005 TT with the v6 Vs a 2006 mustang with s v6 (and the optional Electronic Stability control) being driven on icy/snowy roads - we live in Alberta. Both would of course have top of the line winter tires.
I'm not worried about the power of the TT. He really isn't the sort of kid that is going to abuse it. He is specifically staying away from a v8 mustang as he wants to save gas. im much more worried about the others out there on the road.
Yes I know neither are the best choice for winter and there are much tamer safer choices overall. But you are only 17 once - I just want to make sure he sees 18...
Thanks for the time.

I have an Audi A6 Quattro and use Michelin IceX tires in winter. It is exceptional in snow and ice (Bend, OR). I also have an '05 TT, 225hp turbo 4 Quattro. Haven't yet used it in winter, and may not, but confident it would be excellent with the right winter tires.
I too have reservations about a sports car and a teenager (I remember me at that age). My TT is a pretty hot little car. However it sounds like you are confident in his judgment. If so, the TT is as good as any and I think Quattro ads an element of safety.
Also, since you are a 944 fan, why not a nice one for him? Insurance cost?

Never really considered looking at a 944. Had a great time with it in California but left it behind when moved back to Alberta. Might have to consider- just remember some costly repairs and maintenance - should remember the good too though. Any decent 944 is likely way out of his price. Will have a look even if just to go down memory lane.

Thanks. I'll be looking for something like that In a few years for my "midlife".
We decided to give the mustang a try. Not a Porsche but 27 years newer should be a bit more trouble free.

IMHO, a 944 would be a big mistake; no traction control.
I would be more tempted to get an A4 which has full time awd (torsen) versus the TT's fwd with a quick acting diff (haldex) for a first car. My son who started driving an A4 and now drives a 225 TT notices the difference
