Story 2156 DJ VW/Audi Recalls -2:Potentially Defective Track Rod

WOLFSBURG, Germany (Dow Jones)--Volkswagen AG (G.VOW) and its Audi AG
(G.AUD) subsidiary said Friday they're recalling 428,000 vehicles worldwide
due to a potential defect.
The car-makers said during inspections of certain 1998 Audi A4 and VW Passat
models, they found "the track rod ends of the front axle may leak, thus
causing premature wear."
As a precautionary measure, VW is recalling 270,000 Passats worldwide, and
Audi is taking 158,000 A4, A6 and A8 vehicles off the road for inspection or
replacement of the track rods. All affected models are from 1998.
Both car-makers said they'll write to customers within the next two weeks.
They have already informed dealers.
VW's recalls include 95,000 in Germany, while Audi's total 65,000.
