What aftermarket front struts to replace genuine one?
Hello all and loved this site in the past so i have joined today!
2004 Mk1 TT 1.8T 225 Quattro Coupe with remap to 250BHP
Right i need some advice... Just bought and had mechanic fit Bilstein B4s Front Struts to my 5 grey dotted front springs- so sports suspension, to replace my originalHello all and loved this site in the past so i have joined today!
Right i need some advice... Just bought and had mechanic fit Bilstein B4s Front Struts to my 5 grey dotted front springs-so sports suspension, to replace my original VM Struts which were shot but gave me a great cosmetic low down stance...
What are the correct length aftermarket front struts that you suggest?
The Bilstein B4s were to replace some Monroes (742043SP) that were sent to me via ebay earlier in the week that were way too long, the Bilsteins B4s were a little shorter so then had them fitted.
The car now looks like a tractor! It doesnt feel the bumps but drives like a boat and rides inches above the wheels now, it looks stupid.
In hindsight i should have coughed up for the VM Audi original ones @ £400 but as i threw the Monroe boxes in the skip before the mechanic arrived the 1st time, i dont want to pay out so much more as ive wasted ££ on 2 sets of struts that are wrong plus the mechanics work costs.
I am going around in circles on the internet as i need struts that will fit the sports suspension spings.
Does anyone have any ideas what to go for or any ideas please? This has cost close to £1k now after all the bushes were done and my tyres are getting ruined.
Thank you so much in advance, Kevin

Just buy the original bilstein struts there's no comparison as far as i'm concerned. The OEM audi are bilstein. Find the correct part number bilstein. I've used kyb and monroe in the past and not been impressed with either.
I just tried to find the original part number on etka so you could cross it over but the copy I installed must not be complete. I'm still learning how to navigate the program though.

Bilstein B4 is the stock OEM replacement.
Bilstein B6 is the Bilstein performance shock for stock springs.
Bilstein B8 is the Bilstein performance shock for lowering springs.
You may have the lowering springs already installed - check.

Is this the same for an 01 TT Quattro 180hp? If so, do they come loaded?

Ahh... the springs. The replacement shocks cannot/do not come with springs. Your springs are marked with 3 colour dots specifying the spring rate that was matched to your car. You need to do some homework to find the matching spring rate in the replacement springs, especialy if you are keeping the rears - I take it you are replacing only the fronts. The shocks also need to be the same front-rear, either all B4s or B6s or B8s if the car is lowered. I was specifically warned about that by the Bilstein rep.

Morgan,
I have no idea where you are located (maybe filling in the "Location" in your bio), but there should be an independant VW/Audi specialist (either mechanic or parts place) in your area. They can order parts through the VW/Audi channel and get them cheaper than the dealer will sell you the parts for. I saved approx. 20% by going through them than the dealer and still got a pretty rare (had to be ordered from Germany) part. Suggest you spend some time looking around your locale.
A mechanic should be able to find out the coding on the springs with a flashlight by putting the car up on a hoist. From the 3 dot colour combinations, you should be able to source the correct replacement springs.

Thanks, will do that. Literally just found this while looking for struts and signed in. Will add some info soon. So, I think I stumbled upon one today, the closest is 35 miles but will have to check them out since this is all new to me...
Thanks
