What is the difference between the OBD tool and the Vag-Com?
It looks like there is a big difference in price. Do they differ in function?<ul><li><a href="http://www.obdtool.com/">http://www.obdtool.com/</a</li></ul>

OBDtool is just a hardware interface...
the software they ship is the limited function demoware version of VAG-Com, which does only slightly more than a generic code scanner. If that's all you'll ever want to run, it's a good deal, since Ross-Tech (the VAG-Com people) don't offer an interface without a full VAG-Com license.
However, in order to get full functionality, you would need to upgrade VAG-Com for $99. Only then does VAG-Com becomes really useful, capture/graph full data, change controller settings, etc. OBDTool's Version 1 hardware appears to have the same functionality as Ross-tech's Iso-Com, so you'd save about $30, and version 2 compares to Twin-Com, so you'd save about $50, but in either case lose much of Ross-tech's fine support - they can't be responsible for other people's hardware working or not.
If you don't have a VAG-Com, I would suggest getting the HexCom interface, which has better protocol timing, and also acts as a dongle for software authorization, so you can easily use the full featured VAG-Com software on multiple computers (share the cable [and cost?] with friends!).<ul><li><a href="http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/interfaces.html">Ross Tech hardware interfaces</a></li></ul>
