What is a throttle body alignment?

It syncronizes the throttle body to the gas pedal in a drive by wire car....>>>

How does that work? I can see the value of precision mapping flap location...>>>
to other ECU controlled functions for fuel/air delivery, timeing, etc. But how does it work? In a DBW car the flap is actually moved electro-mechanically but on a cable drive is it just a map to the home position?
