Default Where did you mount your aftermarket GPS?

What I'd really like to see is a mounting solution that uses the dash-center defroster vents.

Currently, I am using a Modshack Gadgett with Ram Ball and a camera mount to hold my Garmin 2610 between the circular center vents (see poorly illuminated picture below). You can't see it, but I've hardwired the GPS through the vent.

A couple problems with this method: One, the Garmin which weighs in at just under a pound, tends to overwhelm the mounting system and works the vents loose enough to rattle. I've already tried insulating the vent with multiple layers of duct tape, but the rattles return eventually. The second problem is that since the GPS is mounted so far inboard, the "line-of-sight" required for satellite reception is much more blocked by the car roof. I lose satellite reception much more frequently than when I had the GPS on the beanbag mount that just sat on the dash. For a couple reasons, I'd rather not wire in an additional GPS antenna.

What I'd like to do is mount the GPS on horizontal part of the dash without resorting to a "permanent" solution involving DS tape or drilling holes. It would be nice to use those big vents on the dash somehow. Any ideas?

Default what about a horizontal aluminum plate on the dash vents...

you could easily conceal zip ties to hold it on, and use the same style mount that you're using with the vent mount.

Default Have you tried a screw in mount with silicone?

I have a friend that did that in his X5. Instead of screwing the thing down, you just use silicone. When you want to remove it, just peel. He says he's removed it a coupe of times and it didn't leave a mark.

Default The bottom compartment works well for me >>

One of my priorities was to have it not be noticeable (don't want to have to worry when I need to street park in Chicago) so this was the perfect spot and I can open the ash tray to really block it if needed. I ran the switched power and external antenna (hidden inside top right dash vent) so it looks completely clean. This is not heads-up line of sight but I mostly rely on the voice prompts anyway...

Maybe your Garmin would fit there as well if you want to try that location.
