Default Why am I getting amazing gas mileage right now??? What did I do different???

I drove my car the 400 mile drive from Los Angeles to San Jose. I got decent mileage on the way up, but on the way back....damn!!!!

I filled the tank with 91 octane, drove the 350 miles drive back to LA, and I've still got 50 miles left in the tank. That's 400 miles!!!!! I've never had that good gas mileage. The most I've ever got out of a tank is like 315 miles.

Any thoughts?????

That's because it's downhill on the way back.

Default Uh no, that's not why. Downhill has nothing to do with it.

I've made that drive a dozen times and never got that good of gas mileage.

Cruise control, altitude, straight aways vs. curves and stop and go traffic can all play factors.

Default MTBE phaseout.....

The mileage (and drivability) improved dramatically in my 225Qc (about 8%) as a result of MTBE free gas in southern Oregon. The other day my buddy who lives in San Mateo Emailed to say his A4 (MTM chip 1.8t) is getting 8% better mileage (I had not informed him of my improvement) while using MTBE free gas. Coincidence???

Default Dude, I have easily done 450.

In my car, if I am doing only hwy miles, I will average about 390 miles per tank. But check this out though, I filled up my tank, drove through Los Angeles crest highway (ran it hard) up to Santa Barbara. Probably drove about 50 miles around town. Drove all the way back to San Gabriel Valley via 101 to the 10. I avergaged about 80mph. I still had about quarter of a tank left!

The most I have ever calculated was about 450 miles in a tank. Usually, however, I get 320 if I drive the streets and stop-and-go traffic.

Sorry for those who don't understand my SoCal banter.

Default Yeah the 76 stations here in SoCal have the ethanol (i think) added to it instead of MTBE

I dunno about the other gas stations

Because your wallet is now $20 lighter. The decreased weight allows for enhanced fuel mileage.
