Default Why bother with Audi service, glorified oil change really, isn't it?...

My 2000 TT has 22K on it and is now due for it's 40K (based on time since it hit the road). It is out of Audi warranty
I have been putting off the service for a while, one reason is that my 3 nearest dealers give completely different content for the 40K service, and different prices ranging from $200 to $700.
I gave the Audi service sheet to a recomended local garage. He quoted me $220.

My first question is, what is your opinion of using Audi to service an out of warranty car compared to a local garage
Second question is, what is your opinion of dealing with the individual service items personally, and taking it to the right places for the harder items such as timing belts, and diagnostics

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Default I've had my out-of-warranty car for about 8 months now...

I've done all of the routine maintenance myself. The great thing about German cars are, they are a piece of cake to work on...once you figure out what the problem is. I've become sort of weary of having my car fixed at repair shops (even dealerships). If it's something I can do myself, I usually go ahead and do it just so I know it was done right.

Out of curiosity, what is involved with the 40k service? I thought it was just oil, brake fluid, and plugs.

Default Schedule says plugs at 30K. 40K service is as follows...

Downloaded it from somewhere, can't remember where though

Oil - change
Engine filter - change
Fluid levels - check
Trans - check shift and clutch
Reset service reminder
Battery - check
Dust filter - change
Cooling system - check
window washers - check/fill
trans - check for leaks
Brakes - check
Drive shafts - check boots
Check tires and wheels
OBD - check DTC memory (don't know what this is)
Lights - check
Door hinge - lube
Road tests
Air cleaner - change
Front end - check dust seals, ball joints, etc
Haldex clutch - change oil (If you've got one, I haven't)
Brake fluid - change

When your timing belt goes they'll give you half off on a new engine.

Default Wow, someplace wanted to charge you $700 for the things on that list?

That's highway robbery, the most time consuming thing on there is the oil and brake fluid change. You can probably do everything on that list if you don't mind getting your hands dirty. If you're unsure about the brake fluid flush, you might want to have that done at a shop, but the rest of the list is a piece of cake.

Oh, the DTC thing just involves hooking it up to a computer and reading off any error codes that might have popped up. You can do it with a VAG-COM if you have one or know someone who does.

Default "It's a very major service" said the service dept after I questioned the $700 quote.......

It's a silly amount for the minor jobs on the list
