Why is everyone so fascinated with 1/4 mi times or 1/4 mi racing as matter of fact? Just curious?

I guess people compare 1/4 mi times as a performance metric between hopped cars...
Somehow that just doesn't seem right, especially for street cars. Maybe it's just a fad more than anything else.

In my mind, I like to know what a car *could* run in the 1/4
as a sort of benchmark, just like a dyno of sorts. Sure lots of things come into play but if I hear of 1.8T powered cars with stock internals running in the 12's, I know that it is one FAST car.
And really it is no different than posting times from the auto-x. Save me the part about how anybody can drive in a straight line...competition is competition, even if it isn't your cup of tea.

It's a different breed of racing, kinda like 60M dash is to a marathon. BTW, have you been hanging
out on the vortex by any chance? 8^) The reason I ask, is those guys are into drag racing, and thought that might be your reason for posting this.

different dyno's measure different horsepower reading's
and that is simply a function of the fact that there is no *standard* other than the hp measurement itself. Peak dyno readings ain't exactly the *whole story* either =)
1/4 mile is subject to drivers skill, but a 12.6 is a 12.6 is a 12.6 in the 1/4, that is besting S4's, M3's, Vettes and some Porsches..
I dunno, that is a measurement for the real world if you ask me=)

I KNEW it! 8^) Yup, they're into the drag scene, and there isn't anything wrong with that,.....
I'm kinda glad they are, it gives me/us some insight into the weak links and such. It's definately not the end all be all to performance benchmarks, and I'm sure 99% of those guys would agree.
