Depends on your conditions - where? how much cold, ice, snow, freeway that are cold but dry, etc.

Default I would then go for a better snow/ice tire, rather than performance type...

I used a steel wheel, with an Michelin Artic Alpin, vs. the performance type.
It was freakin' awesome here in Minnesota last season, and we had one of the worst snow/cold winters in a long time.
I got a 205/55/-16 on steelie's, and they worked great.

I use Dunlop Winter Sport M2's, 205/55HR16, on a 225QC, they work great in all conditions.

I checked Tirerack and the Michelin Artic Alpins's dont seem to come in 205/55/16's.
