Would Audi have US ESP retrofit program if no Explorer/Firestone debacle?

I think its a smart move on their part.
Millions spent save tens of millions in potential lawsuits and missed business.

Audi announced the ESP US retrofit option well in advance of the Firestone problems.

I see no connection with ESP. Mk II suspension mods were response to handling "problem".
