Default Xpost- timing belt tensioner failure.

My brother-inlaw owns my former 1997 A4 1.8TQ w 70k that had a catastrophic failure needing a "new engine" .The dealer wants 6G. After searching the forum it is apparent that the original belt tensioner is known to be defective and in fact has been redesigned. This seems to be a safety issue and either Audi should recall the car or update the current maintenance level for timing belt replacement from 90k down to 60K.
Does anyone have experience with this?
Also how can I get the old and new part numbers to state my case with AoA ?
