Default TT RS Radar/laser detector install

Finally finished install. Radar detector should be a factory option with these cars

You would think, but I've largely stopped using one and rely on my situational awareness. Haven't had a ticket since I stopped using a detector (it's been 5 years). Laser detectors are largely useless. By the time it detects it's too late. The officer already has your speed reading. A jammer is the only effective solution against Lidar and they are illegal. Cops at least around here know how to spot a jammer, too. Radar detectors have also lost their usefulness as more and more places are switching to Lidar.

Then I retract my cool comment. Carry on.

This is untrue, both in legality of shifters and usefulness of detectors. Both are perfectly legal in many states. New detectors filter out BSM, I may see one get through every week, and detection range is now measured in miles depending on terrain.

True jammers are not prohibited at the federal level, but they are at the state level for some states. For example they are illegal in California. So, yes if you live in a state where they are technically still legal then you have a point. I guess I was speaking mostly based on my personal experience. It's all mostly Lidar around here. A laser detector can help if it happens to pick up the beam bouncing of another car, but if your car was the target you are toast. Even jammers may not work depending on where they are mounted and which part of the front the cop was targeting. I've looked into installing a jammer in my RS5, but without cutting up the grill so there is not obstruction, the only place to mount them was way low between the grill and the front splitter. Too far away from the license plate and the headlights, which are the typical targets. I guess it could be better than nothing and newer jammers try to disguise themselves as parking sensors after sending out the jamming signal. Truth be told, I just didn't think it was worth the cost and hassle to install them.

Indeed. Technology is always advancing on both the detection and stealth fronts. But situational awareness, being more aligned with human nature, remains viable. With experience the typical detection areas may be anticipated. Also where to be on the roadway, especially relative to other motorists and the terrain. Time of day and prevailing volume direction are also factors.
