before switching to stage 2, I had had Unitronic stage 1+ (1+ is for 98 RON, 1 is for 95), sensible power&torque increase, bigger than stage 1+ vs 2

I just installed Unitronic Stage 1 plus and the TCU Stage 1 on my 16TTS. Wow....what a change. I bought cable and did it myself. worked really smooth. With the cable, I can turn back to stock whenever I wish and then re-install the Stage 1 or Stage 1 plus as often as I like.

APR Stage 1 (low torque, 91 octane) installed 2 year ago. 20 track days without issues, but changed to 1 heat range colder plugs gapped to .025 (RS7 plugs). Still very streetable.

Default Did you change heat range because of problems with OEM plugs?

I have some friends with APR Stage 1 and had not issues with OEM plugs. I saw APR highly recommended changing the gap to .025. I think they also recommend changing plugs every 20K?

Stage 1 is meant to squeeze more out of the engine with NO hardware upgrades. Stage 1+ maybe some upgrades, but not much. Stage 2 is where you have to think about coils, plugs, intake, down pipe and recommended intercooler.

the gap matter is quite strange, APR recommends .025, while other tuners like Revo or Unitronic to stay with std gap (0.32) and even grade (7)…

OEM plugs gapped to .025 are fine, but I went with 1 heat range colder so that at the end of a 20 minute session on the track the hot engine is not pulling timing at redline and I am still getting max performance. (This is based on internet posts, not data that I have seen, so "maybe".) I did pull the plugs at 9K miles, they show zero wear and no signs of carbon fouling. Probably "inspect and replace if necessary" at 20K miles.

Re: plup gap - After getting the tune, I did one track day with OEM plugs, standard gap, and had a misfire that put me into limp mode, which reset after I shut off the engine and restarted. Talked with a Golf R driver with the same APR stage 1 tune, and he had the same experience. Since switching to the colder plugs (NGK) with the narrower gap, I have had no repeats of this problem (or any other problem) over 19 track days.
