Default Ideas on a range of codes. '06 A42.0TQ6M

This is an '06 A4 2.0TQ6M and we are a looking for suggestions on the cause of these codes that occurred after a bit of spirited driving.

8 Faults Found:
001602 - Sensor Reference Voltage A: Circuit: Low
P0642 - 002 - Lower Limit Exceeded - Intermittent

008583 - Bank 1; System too Lean at Idle
P2187 - 004 - No Signal/Communication - Intermittent

001287 - Idle Control System RPM: Higher than Expected.
P0507 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - Intermittent

008851 - Fuel Pressure Regulator Valve (N276): Mechanical Malfunction
P2293 - 002 - Lower Limit Exceeded - Intermittent

004243 - Bank 1; Fuel Measuring System 2: Malfunction
P1093 - 008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

000313 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S2: Response too Slow
P0139 - 004 - No Signal/Communication - Intermittent

004372 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor; B1 S2: Internal Resistance too High
P1114 - 008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

001109 - EVAP System: Large Leak Detected
P0455 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded

Just guessing I would say that it probably poped an intake hose connection under boost and a system pressure test is a place to start.

The fuel pressure regulator valve (N267) may actually be bad and causing the idle issues.

I would like to think that the O2 sensor errors are due to the leak or fuel metering but I suppose that the sensor may be bad.

Any ideas on where to start looking on the Evap System leak. Is there a common failure point?

TIA for any help.

Default How do you know the codes where stored during the "spirited driving" session?....

Did you check for any codes prior to the driving period you associate the stored codes with? Clear the codes and see if any codes reoccur after driving the car for awhile.

The meaning of "Intermittent" in this context for the DTCs listed as Intermittent, the prerequisite conditions and/or "Hard" faults did not exist as active faults when the scan to retrieve the codes was performed.

Default We didn't have a current VAG system before the CEL began to appear

After the codes we upgraded the system to the current cable and software and then pulled these codes.
I will tell him to clear codes and then check again. It may take a month or so because he will be on a trip for that time.

We will look for an obvious boot leak.

Thanks for the response.

Default Intermittent faults can be really hard to pin down. If they are reoccuring but ...

still intermittent, then the "Freeze Frame" data associated with the stored DTCs will help figure out what the cause is, buy recording the operational parameters existing when the DTC is recorded.

Default Nothing really grabs my attention as clearly malfunctioning .....

I suppose the freeze frame data is from the DTCs stored before, and not DTCs that are new since the ECU was last cleared. Being intermittent DTCs from the past, unless they continue to reoccur and store new DTC events after clearing the fault memory, the past intermittent faults can be disregarded as they don't actively exist now.
If after clearing the preexisting intermittent DTCs, the same ones reoccur within a short time, then the associated freeze frame data will probably be different also, with further investigation warranted.

Default After more web searching I am beginning to suspect HP fuel pump cam follower

and/or Worn cam lob for HP fuel pump due to wear on the cam which may be the one-piece Rev A cam.
When my son returns we will check if he has rev A or B cam and check the FP cam lob follower for wear.

The GTI 2.0 FSI forum seems to have a number of threads on this issue.

Thanks for your thoughts. I hope to be able to help him deal with this when he is back in 3-4 weeks.<ul><li><a href="http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3366758">http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3366758</a</li></ul>

Default Agreed, I noticed the frequent similar events as reported by others too. ...f

but I had not reached any clear conclusions on relevance. I supposed that once the codes that reoccur where known to be active for sure, would help indicate the best approach for further investigation.

Your research is a good find, sounds like you have a reasonable plan.

Default Update from Audi Dealer diagnostic tech

My son took the car to the local dealer here in Minneapolis (Carosel) and had a tech that seemed knowledgeable look at the codes.
He said that the two codes that are listed on the cam lobe wear TSB are usually accompanied with at least one other code "fuel high pressure" or something like that. We didn't get the code that her was looking for.
He says he has done a number of cams and at this time he doesn't think that is a problem due the lack of the other code/s.
He suggested clearing the codes and seeing if they return. If they do then we have it documented in their system as in warranty so we have the basis for discussion with AoA for possible help.
It has been a week since the codes were cleared and no CEL yet.
We are still concerned about the issue because if he has a Rev A cam it is probably only a matter of time before it will go bad.

Default Re: Ideas on a range of codes. '06 A42.0TQ6M

It looks like its a combination 5 problems.

Some if the lean faults, idle unexpected faults. The crankcase breather failing (easy test start the vehicle try to turn off the oil cap, if you can turn it off and with little effort remove the oil cap, the breather should be okay. If the cap is stuck, the breather is bad.)

The HP fuel pump cam follower failing. Easiest way is to remove the high pressure pump and inspect the cam and follower.

I have seen 2-3 2.0t turbo's and 3.2 liters also having faulty Evap purge valves. Causing the Evap leak and Idle control system too high. Remove the valve get a vacuum pump, apply vacuum to the valve it should hold well over 20inch's no problem. If not the valve is leaking air into the system causing a lean problem.

Sensor reference Voltage, there is an ECM update if your ECU PN# is 8E0910115B than your software level higher than 0130 if not than you need an update. If your ECU PN# is 8E0910115M than your software level should be 0070. If you have both of those software levels. Than you need to replace your Intake flap motor.

There are updated o2 sensors, for your o2 sensor internal resistance faults here is the part number for the new sensor. 06E 906 265 C
