VAG COM connection problems

I installed the latest version of Vag Com into my laptop and it will not connect to the controller. I made sure the port was working and all connectors were plugged in and it is still not connecting. I want to run it in shareware mode before I activate it but it will not connect. Anyone have this problem before? If so how did you correct it.
