2 Questions re: injured tire and proper lugs
I just acquired a set of used winter tires and alloys from a friend who'll be trading in his TT soon. They are going to replace my ugly steelies so I"m very happy but I have 2 questions:
1) One tire has a gash on its sidewall, apparently from an encounter with a curb. My friend drove on it, but I'm not so sure it's safe for the long haul. It appears to only go as deep as the "rim protector" section of the side profile. Here's a pic of the wound:

The tire is a Blizzak WS-50 in 225/45-17 size. Would it make sense to replace it with a shaved or used version of the same? I don't see WS-50's on TireRack's website anymore; are they even available? All the set are evenly worn with a tread depth of about 5/16". We don't get much snow in Chicago anymore so I'd like to get away without buying a complete set of 4.
2) He also gave me the lugs he said were used for the Borbet CB wheels but the lugs he gave me look like OEM Audi ball-seat lugs and I think they should be the cone-type. If I'm right, that means the shop that swapped his wheels last time put the cone seat lugs on his OEM wheels. He gave me 20 of these:

Do Borbet wheels need cone seat lugs? He's trading his TT in about 2 months. Is he running a risk running his OEM Audi wheels held on with what I'm guessing are now cone seat lugs? I'm trying to decide if I'm being alarmist or prudent.
TIA,
~john

2nd that. Also WS-50's are currently being phased out since the revo-1 has been brought to market
you might want to call tirerack and see if they have 1 and they are willing to shave it to proper tread depth so it matches.

yup, although if he's got 10/32nd left and new ones have 13/32, then they're almost new
I'd say that's within Audi's tolerance for quattro. And given that the TT doesn't have TorSen but Haldex, that difference should be even less important.

good info thanks. i put the revo's on the wifes car last year, but if the ws-60 is coming i will put
those on my car this year. when i talked to tire rack last winter they told me the revo was replacing the ws-50. they may not have known about the ws-60 at that point.
do you have any more info about the ws-60?
