Default Best way to clean off lug bolts?

During winter my summer lugbolts got a bit rusty and also have some whitish deposits on them. I thought they were stored dry and clean but I guess I was wrong.

Any rec's on how to properly clean the threads?

Clamp hex end in vise or hold w/ vise grips, then use wire brush parallel to threads

Maybe you want to "chase the threads" and really clean the deposits more uniformally.
