Default Do I need to replace TPMS sensors when replacing worn tires?

I am surprised this hasn't come up before (or maybe it has and I didn't find it when searching the archives). I found a couple archived threads that mentioned the TPMS batteries may only last around 5 years. Does that mean I should order new TPMS sensors when I order replacement tires for my TT? The car is less than 2 years old, and has about 22,000 miles on its original tires.

Can the batteries in the sensors just be exchanged for fresh ones (if they are even sold separately)?

The batteries are non servicable, I wouldn't replace the TPMS until they wear out personally unless you've got money to burn.

Sounds reasonable enough. But can the sensors be replaced with the tires mounted? Or if the batteries die before the new tires are worn, will I have to pay the expense of dismounting, remounting, and re-balancing the tires just to service the TPMS? (Pardon my ignorance if the TPMS valve stems can just be swapped out externally without removing the tires.)

the TPMS sensor is mounted inside against the rim underneath the tire, to replace you would need to unmount and remount the tire.

Even so, I still wouldn't pre emptively replace them. You may need another set of tires before that time, or the batteries may last well beyond their rated time.

OK, thanks for all of the replies and advice. Is 5 years truly the typical battery life for these things? Why couldn't they make them kinetically recharge like some wristwatches.

kinetic charging watches are actually quite fragile, you wouldnt be able to make it rugged enough to survive the abuse of being bolted to the wheel and still get enough of a charge out of it
