A few Q's on winter tires. (1) What's the difference between the original Pilot Alpins and PA2's?
I have a lot of experience with the original Alpins and want something with better snow/ice grip.
(2) For the Dunlop winter sport M3's, what impact does run-flat have on tire characteristics? And how do they compare to the PA2's?
This is for a 2001 S4. I currently have Alpins mounted on 16" rims.
Thanks
Rory

The PA2 is a noticable step up in snow traction from the old Pilot Alpin. It is approaching that of the Winter Sport M3/Blizzak LM25 tire level for snow traction, but is still a bit more biased towards dry handling.
The run-flat versions of various snow tires will ride more stiffly, and are only for vehicles with tire pressure monitoring systems whose owners wish to maintain the run-flat capability of their OE runflat tires.

winter

Thanks for that. Could you expand on "step up"? My current Alpins have high tread blocks and
lots of sipes which you'd expect from a snow tire, but the rubber is fairly stiff. Do the PA2's have different rubber? And when were they first released?
Thanks

Complete tread pattern redesign and much better feedback from this past winter season versus the old tire. We do not get detailed info on tread compounds from the manufacturer, but these are almost always changed with significantly updated tires.
