Default Lug torquing.

I took my day old Ace Lolas to discount tire today so they can retorque them. I was going to do it myself but I don't have the necessary tools yet. Two questions:

1. The fifth lug on every wheel of mine is a "wheel lock" and the guys at the shop did not want to torque it for me because they said it was a bad idea and wheel locks are not supposed to be torqued because I'll have a b*tch of a time getting it off myself roadside. "Wouldn't having only 4 of 5 lugs torqued to 90 ft-lbs warp my rotors over time?" They said "No, it shouldn't be a problem" Well is it? It's got me worried to a point that I don't want to use these friggin' wheel locks if I can't properly torque them with the rest.

2. Anybody have a good list of tools I'll need to do my own wheel swaps now that I have 2 sets? I know a torque wrench - but what kind and what else?

TIA
Larry

Default Re: Lug torquing.

The only additional tool that I bought was a 1/2 inch drive, 6-point, 17mm deep impact socket to fit onto my torque wrench. I didn't really want the impact socket (meant for use with pneumatic impact wrenches) because it seems like overkill, but Sears was out of the deep socket in 6-point 17mm size. Oh, BTW, I also got my torque wrench from Sears - Craftsman. Just make sure that you get one that covers the torque range you care about (90 ft-lbs in this case.) I think the one I found is good to 130 ft-lbs.

As far as the wheel locks go...I guess I can see their point, but personally I torqued my wheel locks too - that seems pretty important to me. What's the point of the lock anyway if you can remove it with pliers? I'd also imagine that if your lugs are *properly* torqued (i.e. to 90 lbs,) removing them shouldn't be the huge problem that it is when they're overtorqued by an impact wrench.<p>
