NorthEast (NJ) Winter...Nokian WR's or Dunlop M3's....
as a dedicated snow? Will be running 255/40/17's on stock pie plates and will be purchasing new rims/rubber for the summer. The WR's are not snows but all season, correct?
TIA

Nokians... yes and no
Nokians are an all-season, in that they wear well at summer temps. However, they carry the Severe Duty rating of a real snow tire. Look for a "snowflake over mountain" symbol. They are great snow tires. Folks in Minnesota swear by them. I love 'em in California, where a ski trip can be 2 hours on 60-degree freeways followed by driving through a 4-foot dump of snow.
In 255/40-17, the WR is V-rated, which helps dry-road handling a lot. Go for them. You won't regret it.

If you're using them as dedicated snow tires, I would suggest getting the 235/45/17.
I have the 235/45/17 H-rated Nokian WR as dedicated winter tires (in MN, BTW), and they're great. They performed pretty well in the dry, considering it's winter rated (even though it's an all-season tire).
The wider profile of the 255/40 will make it a little harder to push through the snow. The reason I know it's because when there's several inches of snow on the road, my Passat (with only FWD, mind you) equipped with 205/55/16 Michelin Artic Alpins cuts through the snow better. Same goes for very slushy roads. Although, I must admit, the quattro more than makes up for the wider profile.
I also heard good things about the M3. Tough choice. The only reason I selected the WR it's because of the longer thread life (50k miles, I believe, but we'll see about that), and that it's rated all-season (so I don't feel so bad when on dry roads) . JPrice's (he'll pop in eventually. Where are you?) family uses them year round.
Good luck. BTW, loved your post about swapping out the plugs.

I currently run M3s in Philly area
Our winters are cold but mostly dry. The dunlops perform very well in the dry (not as mushy as say blizzaks). They perform well in snow, although I thouht the blizzaks were a tad better in the white stuff.
given that our winters are mostly dry, and I don't remember to change my driving habits in the wintertime, the dunlops are a reasonable choice for me.

Thanks. Went with Jack @ the Tire Factory in Mich on the Nokian WR's. Good dudes over there
They beat the price of my local tire dealer by $50 per tire with no tax or shipping.

Tire Factory
