Silly question, how can different width tires fit on the same rim?

Theoretically, the first number in the tire size is the tread width in millimeters. In the case of the stock tires, the tread width would be just over 8". I have measured several tires that were not exactly the nominal size. You will get very little benefit from installing a tire that is wider than the wheel, as the sidewall will tend to "roll over" in turns.

It really depends on the tire
You have to look at the info the tire mfr has on a particular size. Generally the rule of thumb is to have a tire that the center of the range of widths that the tire fits is the wheel width one should use as being optimum.
