Default What the hell is "universal lug pattern"?

I am frequently checking ebay for wheel deals. It came up several times that a wheel is touted as having universal 5 bolt pattern, fits any 5 bolt cars.

What is it? Scam or I am missing something? I do not see how a bolt pattern could be "universal". Is this the 10 holes in the wheel kind of deal? Even then I can only see it fitting 2 different patterns.

????

TIA

Default I'm only guessing but

in the 60s and early seventies there were mag wheels that had eplitical holes that one could insert a metal tab that had a hole drilled for correct applicaton. If you changed cars, you got a new tab - thus cheaper than buying new wheels. Inretrospect, probably not a very strong setup.
