Audi Q5: General Information and Recommended Maintenance Schedule

With proper attention to maintenance and repairs, you can keep your Q5 on the road for years to come. Whether you purchase the vehicle new or used, knowing when to change the oil, inspect all items for wear and tear, and make necessary replacements can keep your vehicle running strong and may help prevent expensive repairs and breakdowns as the mileage accumulates. Whether your goal is to reach 50,000 miles or 200,000 miles, here are some tips and suggestions for keeping your Q5 in top shape.

Oil Change

Audi recommends changing the engine oil and replacing the filter after the first 5,000 miles on the car or one year after delivery. After this point, the automaker suggests changing the oil and replacing the filter every 10,000 miles or one year, whichever occurs first. It's important to reset the service reminder indicator display after each oil change.

If you've just purchased a new Q5, it's important to know that oil consumption may be higher during the first 3,000 miles of vehicle ownership. This is due to the necessary engine break-in period.

Tire Rotation

Tire rotation is part of Audi's recommended standard maintenance service. The vehicle's tires should be rotated at 5,000 miles or the one year after delivery, whichever comes first. However, Audi doesn't suggest rotating tires after this interval. Reset the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) at the same time.

Common Questions

Is the extended warranty worth it?

Many prospective Audi customers wonder whether it's necessary to purchase the extended warranty. Audi offers Audi Care and Audi Care Plus. Audi Care can be purchased up front or after you have bought or leased the vehicle, which Audi Care Plus is designed for MY 2007 and newer Audi vehicles with at least 40,000 miles.

Audi Care covers several services such as oil changes, inspection as well as replacement of windshield wipers and wiper blades, testing and replacing the battery if needed, inspecting the cooling and exhaust systems for leaks, replacing the spark plugs at the recommended 35,000 miles or 55,000 miles for older cars, and inspecting and replacing belts and tensioners. Audi Care provides prepaid scheduled maintenance at 10,000 mile intervals from 15,000 or 45,000 miles. Audi Care Plus covers vehicles at the 55,000, 65,000, and 75,000 mile service intervals.

Common Issues

Carbon Buildup

Some Q5 owners have experienced carbon buildup. The problem seems to occur more in 3.2 models, which were produced until 2012. Symptoms may include rough idling and/or shuddering, a check engine light, and failed attempts to start the vehicle. There was never an official recall; although, Audi recommends using its approved VW 502 00 oil for gasoline engines as well as using the highest quality fuel to boost engine performance and reduce the risk of related engine problems.
