There is a general consensus among Audi A4 B8 owners. Properly care for your engine and all major systems, including, and especially, your transmission system during the first few years of owning your car (at least up to 50,000 miles) and you will minimize your risk for avoidable repairs later on down the line. While you can't completely avoid needing to put some money back into this highly sophisticated machine, keeping up with your regular maintenance schedule will help to maintain the life of your engine and other major systems.

Warranty Extension

The drivetrain on the Audi A4 B8 is considered to be one of the best. Having said that, it's important to note that over the life of your car, you are likely to face an array of both mechanical and electrical problems. All of which are sure to make you rethink whether the Audi Extended Warranty is a sound investment. Trust us, it is! The extra coverage will cover you against common problems, such as a faulty window regulator. This doozy of a repair could cost you $600 for parts and labor alone. Keep reading to find out some of the other common repairs you could face as the clock (and odometer) races on.

Common Problems

After you reach approximately 50,000 miles on your odometer, you could face some irreversible damage to your water pump, resulting in the need for a replacement. Your bearings could also start to wear down at this point. Have a complete inspection of your vehicle, including regular oil and filter changes to get ahead of these and other problems. As well, keep and eye on your coil springs. An expensive repair, these little guys could spell big trouble for your car. Add in damage to your braking system, and you could be looking at a $1,020 repair bill. Other more expensive repairs include, but do not include, catalytic converter ($500), valve cover gasket ($500), clutch ($1,500) and timing belt ($700).

Sports Package Versus S-Line

The biggest difference between the sports package and the S-Line package include, but is not limited to, "Dynamic" badging, a sportier body kit, and a sleek, attractive aluminum finish. The S-Line also features a three-spoke steering wheel and memory seats, while the sports package comes with 18- to 19-inch wheels, sports seating, a 20mm lower sports suspension, and paddle shifters.

Scheduled Maintenance

Make sure to change your engine oil and filter every 5,000 miles. You could easily expect to spend around $2,500 in maintenance costs per year. Replace both sets of direct-shift gearbox fluid after 35,000 miles (the cost could reach up to $500; however, it cannot be avoided). You should have a complete vehicle inspection after 50,000 to 55,000 miles. As more and more general wear and tear begins to show up under the hood of your car, this is the ideal time to start having needed repairs made.

Common Questions

How many miles can the A4 reach?

Many Audi A4 owners have reported accumulating 150,000 miles on their car, easily. Follow your regular maintenance schedule and your A4 should continue to go strong for an addition 50,000 to 100,000 miles after that.

How is the B8 on reliability?

When it comes to reliability, the B8 has removed remarkably; that is not to say the B8 suffered in this key area. Out of 33 automotive brands on the market today, the Audi ranks at a very competitive number 11, with only 111 defects per 100 cars. (The national average is 108 defects per 100 cars to give you some perspective on this ranking.)

Can I drive my B8 with a broken timing belt?

No. You will need to have your car towed to your nearest Audi dealership or to a local licensed mechanic for immediate professional repair.

What are the best attributes of the B8 (as compared to the B7)?

There are a number. For the sake of time, here are a few: 2.0T engine, extra torque, improved navigation, extra trunk space, adjustable steering feel (known as "drive select") as well as improved throttle response and an enhanced suspension system. The wheel base is also longer and the weight distribution is remarkably better.

Common Issues

Timing Belt Replacement

The symptoms of a failing timing belt include, but are not limited to, the following: your car won't start, loud noises come from the timing cover and, of course, the belt itself may be broken.

Clutch Pad Replacement

Generally speaking, a replacement should be needed until you've got at least 40,000 miles on your odometer.
